Wednesday 100: Of Ascents

Sometimes he remembers lying bloodied at Culloden or kneeling before John, and wants to tell that self, longing for death, what will come. He wants to whisper through time, speaking of William and Ian, about seeing Fergus settled with a woman to match him, about his daughter finding him so he can learn her and her children too. He wants to assure himself, broken, that there will be a time when he wakes whole, unsurprised, though ever grateful, to be holding Claire.

"Courage, man," he wants to say. "You might go out weeping, but you'll return with songs of joy."

Wednesday 100: Reluctant Friendship

He knew he shouldn’t grow to care too much for Mistress Beauchamp. Dougal wouldn’t let up on her easily and there was work to do to gleam her motives, but he had watched her nearly every hour of the day for weeks— seen her care for the people of Drummuir when she needn’t, taken the brunt of her judgment when she aimed to protect their people, had a first row seat to her inability to be cowed when so many others would have folded. So, when those bawbags at the inn had called her a whore, Angus couldn’t stop himself.

Jamie invited the woman to sit down and join them for a dram. God knows she needs it more than we do, he thought. While she refused the drink, she did settle herself in a chair directly across from Claire and to Jamie’s left.

“I am so sorry for your loss, Mrs...” Claire began, and then sighed in exacerbation, “forgive me, I never asked your name. My apologies.”

“Dinna fash yerself, Mistress,” the woman managed a small smile, “meself were the last thing on my mind, all things considered. It’s Alice. Alice MacGregor. And it’s just “miss” as I’m no’ wed. Yer servant, mistress. Sir.” Alice bowed her head towards himself and Claire. Jamie returned the gesture.

“Again, I am so sorry for your loss.” Claire took a deep breath and continued, “I’d like to ask you some questions about Obediah before his, well…untimely passing. It’ll give me a better understanding of how he died and maybe help prevent other such deaths from happening.”
