Astra, Queen of the Frostborn

An Original Design crafted by Sarah Kruger (@queenofthefrostborn)
“The Frostborn are a people, beings made of that frost, that fog, that cold and mystery. Their queen is strong as ice, and just as beautiful. Astra. As her story came to me, playing out in my head, I knew that I had to make her real.”

Cinderella With a Twist

An Original Design by Mandy Pursey, with Ryan Pursey (@bethesparkcosplay)
“Growing up as an arm amputee, I dreamed of the day when fairy tales would include characters who looked like me too! I came up with the idea of Cinderella trading out her glass slippers for a glass arm, and set to work making this story come to life.”

Iron Mask 85, Avengers: Endgame

Made by Frank P. (@franklybuilt)
“My late father took me to see the first Iron man in 2008 when I was about 16 years old and ever since then I’ve been hooked on the MCU and specifically Iron Man. I always dreamed of having my own armor. I mean what kid wouldn’t? But it was always this impractical goal and I had no idea how to use EVA foam or Papercraft. Years went by and eventually, I felt it was time to try my hand at a Cosplay after watching Avengers Endgame and being blown away with the MK85 Armor! It was time to make my first Cosplay. Enter 3D Printing.”

“Ack! is a part of an amnesia Dungeons and Dragons campaign and has no memory of her past. She chose her name because it’s the first sound she can remember anyone making in reference to her.”

Mercy (Classic Skin), from the Overwatch game

Made by Birdy Cosplay (@birdy-cosplay)
“Costume is made by me, the only purchased parts are the yellow wing parts (I ordered them already in this shape) and the wig (I styled it myself,  but bought the base from Arda Wigs). It was my biggest project so far and it took around 9 months with some short breaks to complete it.”

Arturia Pendragon, from the anime & game Fate/stay night

Crafted by Daniella Lo Presti (@ksfabricartist)
“I created this costume in order to bring to life this character in a realistic way. To replicate the skirt embroidery I deconstructed and pieced back together with different types of lace and I used several layers of cloth so that, when twirling, the gown would open up like a flower. Indeed, in Fate Zero, Arturia is described as being the flower of the battlefields.”

“Ready to Fight!!”

Consisting of assorted recreations, from Noe Ernesto Cruz Vargas (@lobisonx9)
“In this video, I show most of the cosplay that I have done for several years, in the pure gamer style. It has been a lot of creative work, use of many materials and hours and hours of work. We have an altruistic group in Mexico, we visit children’s hospitals, orphanages, children with cancer, etc.”

Sally, from The Nightmare Before Christmas

Crafted by Liz Gatouco (@cosbrarian)

Comic-Con Masquerade Contest: Heather Robb
Costume Name: Medieval Evil Queen

Costume Description: Medieval Evil Queen is my (mostly) historical design based on the Evil Queen from Snow White. This costume was a great way to explore combining a lot of mediums as well as trying some things for the first time. Not only did I design and make all of the garments, but the crown and brooch are resin printed and the embellishments on the dress are 3D printed fabric pieces. I love bringing together modern and traditional costume and prop techniques, and the juxtaposition of those with historical garments really excited me about this project!

Bio: Heather has been making with her hands since she was 8 years old. Anything her mom or other relatives put in front of her was fair game–sewing, crochet, knitting, hook rugs, coloring, painting, pottery, sculpture, and so many more. She tried so many things and enjoyed all of them immensely. As she got older and had the freedom to explore more mediums she’d never dared to try in the past, she realized how much she loved making costumes and props because it requires so many skill sets, constantly drives her to continue learning, and has helped give her the confidence to be herself. She is now co-owner of Sionnach Studios - a costume, prop, & set design and fabrication studio based in Seattle.

Comic-Con Masquerade Contest: Jonathan Hika

Costume Name: Geralt of Rivia

Costume Description: In the land of Temeria, one Witcher rises to meet the monsters the plague the lands. His swords and his armour are his only defenses. When he came to me I knew what he wanted and though it would be my first time, I set straight to work crafting, the Kaer Morhen Mastercraft Armour. Every detail made to protect, every piece hand sewn, molded or hardened for his purposes. I saw what he had and made it more. This armour can truly withstand sword or claw and is meant to be used to do a Witcher’s work. So toss a coin to your Witcher a friend of humanity.

Comic Con Masquerade Contest: Natalie Lucia

Costume Name: Padme Amidala Skywalker

Costume Description:  The costume consists of a velvet cloak made of 7 yards of velvet and lined with an additional 7 yards of satin. The cloak was hand painted over several days with alternating colors of teal, blue, silver and white. After painting, 2,000 sequins were attached by hand to the entire cloak. The collar was made with a velvet base and has 1,700 sequins hand sewed to it and then fitted to the cloak. The collar has 6 sequined streamers that were also hand sewn and attached to fall to the floor.
The under dress is made of chiffon and was hand dyed to simulate the water and then smocked down to the bodice. Matching gems were also added to the neckline.

The flats have over 800 sequins hand sewn to netting and then attached to the base flat and show the Naboo symbol in white.
The jappor snippet is a 3D print that was then hand painted and strung on a delicate silver chain and the wig was styled with flowers, ribbons and leaves that I curled and hand painted and then attached. The entire costume took over 79 hours to complete and was entirely made by me.

Bio: Natalie is an avid costumer who enjoys learning new skills with each piece she creates. She enjoys recreating looks from fandoms such as Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Game of Thrones, The Mummy, Lord of the Rings, The Handmaid’s Tale & Labyrinth. In addition to costume creation, she is a musician who teaches music to students of all ages.

Comic-Con Masquerade Contest: Velma Rippstein
Costume Name: Maudra Fara
Costume Description: The grungy fantasy world created in Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is highly inspiring. The details for this piece were meticulously pieced together following many screenshots of the costume (trying to get just the right design elements combined with the lumpy effect on the vest was a challenge!). This whole costume was made by Velma with patterns drafted from scratch. The talisman on the crown was sculpted and casted in resin, the larger pieces on the tunic are paper clay, and the Arathim creature that attaches itself to Fara’s face and takes over her brain was sculpted and cast in latex. The fabric pieces were made similar to those of the puppet in the series.

image

Bio: Velma has been costuming for 6 years and in that time has made over 150 costumes for fun and profit, also working part time as a costumer for a local theater. She prefers to dabble with many different maker methods and mediums rather than focus on one specialty, favoring challenges that require the use of a great variety of skills. For Velma, the desire to create through costuming is a passion that has swept her farther than she ever expected to go and loves seeing that creative fervor in other artists

Costume Name: Dr. Stephen Strange and Clea (Strange)

Costume description: Dr. Strange’s costume is a recreation of the first movie costume. Clea’s costume is very loosely based on her comic book costume, as she has not made the jump from paper into the MCU.

Bio: A couple of archaeologists who like to make costumes and dress up.

Comic-Con Masquerade Contest: Catherine M. Fisher of Cat Designs Unlimited

Costume Name: Wonder Elsa

Costume Description: The perfect mashup of DC’s Wonder Woman and Disney’s Elsa - two great women combined into one!!!  This is one sexy superhero you don’t want to mess with!  She’s not as fancy as I’d wanted her to be since I’m working 2 jobs, fostering 3 rambunctious kittens, tending to a 14 yr old under the weather cat, and had such a short time to complete the costume, but Wonder Elsa is still ready to fight crime and become the newest member of the Justice League!  The weather may be heating up in San Diego, but Wonder Elsa is keeping cool and ready to battle the forces of evil!

Bio: I’ve entered the Masquerade since my first year attending Comic Con (2005), so when SDCC 2020 was cancelled, I was super disappointed!  Having a virtual Masquerade is a wonderful idea for us diehards - thank you so much for doing this!  I didn’t hear about the virtual Masquerade till July 8th, which gave me only a week to come up with an idea and whip something up, and while she’s not a super fancy costumer or blinged out as I’d hoped to make her, it’s still an honor to be part of this year’s Masquerade at home!
